Host Choice


Africa which one was chosen like host for the World Cup 2010 and it was the part of a policy to rotate the event among football confederations. There five African nations to be found undertaking to host in the World Cup 2010: Egypt, Libya, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia (co-hosting).

By following the decision of the FIFA Executive Committee, co-hosted did not allow to the tournaments and Tunisia extracted from the undertaking process. The committee also took the decision that he will not consider Libya’s solo bid while it was no longer met all the stipulations laid down in the official List of Requirements.

After one round of voting, Sepp Blatter, president of FIFA announced the winning bid at a media conference on 15 May 2004 in Zurich. Then South Africa was awarded the rights to host the tournament by defeating Morocco and Egypt. Voting Results are:

Beside Tunisia extracted on 8 May 2004 and Libya bid was rejected but did not meet the list of requirement and both countries joint bidding was not allowed.

On 2006 to 2007, unconfirmed report circulated in various news sources that the World Cup 2010 could be moved to another country. Some people like Franz Beckenbauer, Horst R. Schmidt and allegedly and some FIFA executives, expressed concern over the planning, organization and pace of South Africa’s preparations. Nevertheless, FIFA officials constantly expressed their confidence in South Africa as host, stating that a contingency plan existed only to cover natural catastrophes, as had been in place at previous FIFA World Cups.
