Football History - Previous International Competitions

Part Three

In 1872 the world’s first international football match was a challenging match which one played in Glasgow between Scotland and England. In 1884, the inaugural edition of the British Home Championship took place with the first international tournament. The sport was seldom played outside the United Kingdom. As football began to increase in popularity in other parts of the world at the turn of the century, it was held as a demonstration sport with no medals awarded at the year 1900 and 1904 and at the year 1906 Interrelated Games.

There was an attempt made by FIFA to arrange an international football tournament after FIFA was founded in 1904 between nations outside of the Olympic framework in Switzerland in 1906. For the international football, these were very early days and the official history of FIFA describes the competition as having been a failure.

Football became an official contest at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London which one planned by The Football Association and England’s football government body that the event was or amateur players only. It was regarded doubtfully as a show rather than a competition.

In 1909, Sir Thomas Lipton organized the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy tournament in Turin with the Olympic event continuing to be contested only between amateur teams. The Lipton tournament was a championship between individual clubs from different nations and each one of which represented an entire nation. The competition is sometimes described while The First World Cup and beside featured the most prestigious professional club from Italy, Germany and Switzerland.

FIFA agreed to recognize the Olympic tournament in 1914 as a World Football Championship for Amateurs and took the best responsibility for managing the incident. This cemented a way for the world’s first global football competition which was held at the 1920 Summer Olympics. It was contested by Egypt and thirteen European teams and won by Belgium. Beside Uruguay won the next two Olympic football tournaments in 1924 and 1928.

Part Two

The FIFA World Cup usually known the Football World Cup but referred to simply as the World Cup. It is an international association football competition contested by the men’s national teams of the members of FIFA. Every four years, the championship has been awarded since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946.

The current format of the contest involves 32 teams by competing for the title at venues through the host nation over a period of about a month. This stage is often called the World Cup Finals.

Seven nations have won the title during the 18 tournaments that have been held. A record five times, Brazil has won the World Cup and they are the only playing team to have played in every tournament. Italy who is the current champions, have won four titles and Germany are next with three titles. Another former champion is Uruguay. It was the winners of the opening tournament and Argentina also with two titles each. England and France got with one title each.

The World Cup is the most widely-viewed sporting incident in the world, where an expected 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 World Cup which is held in Germany. The next World Cup will be held in South Africa between 11 June and 11 July 2010, and the 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil.

Football History - Football

Part One

It’s usually recognized as football or soccer and is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players using a round ball. It is the most popular sport in the world.

The game is always played on a rectangular grass or non-natural lawn field. It played with a goal in the centre of each of the short ends. The purpose of the game is to score through pouring the ball into the opposing goal. Goalkeepers are the only players who allowed to use their hands or arms to proper the ball but the rest of the team usually use their feet to kick the ball into position.

The modern game was codified in England following the formation of The Football Association and 1983 Laws of the Game created the foundations for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally by the Federation Internationale de Football Association and generally known by the acronym FIFA. The most esteemed international football competition is the FIFA World Cup which one held every four years.
